High Water Mark of Conservatism
On July 3rd, 1863, during Pickett’s Charge, a few Confederate soldiers made it to the stonewall that protected the Union soldiers. This part of the battle has been called the high water mark of the Confederacy. I believe that in 2004, we saw the high water mark of conservatism. On election day in November 2004, President George Bush defeated Senator John Kerry and the Republicans held on to majorities in both houses of Congress. Conservatives and conservative values were the reason for this overwhelming victory. Christian conservatives helped win the day by voting for family values, lower taxes, security, less government. Around the country conservatives rejoiced at this victory, the Democrats seemed in disarray and doomed to stay the minority party. The economy was good and oil prices were stable.
Soon after this victory, things in Iraq seemed to go bad as the insurgency got worse and many American soldiers died. After this all the news could talk about was the violence in Iraq and how many American soldiers died each day. Suddenly, the Democrats found the issue they have been looking for. About the same time a hurricane hit New Orleans and did lots of damage, due to the incompetence of Louisiana’s governor and the mayor of New Orleans, (both Democrats) aid was slow in coming to these people. The media and the Democrats were able to pin the blame on the federal government and specifically on President Bush. (Some even blame the President for the Hurricane) The Democrats and their willing accomplices in the media were able to use these two issues to ride too congressional control in the 2006 elections.
Since the Democrats took charge in 2006, food and fuel prices have doubled and they refuse to help. The economy has slowed due to bills they have pushed through or have refused to act upon. At the same time the US housing crisis has hurt the economy so I don’t blame them completely, however they could have helped. Now the media has anointed Barak Obama to be our next President and the American people are now so convinced of the evilness of George Bush and the Republicans that the Republicans are going to lose more seats in congress even though congress has the lowest approval rating in history.
I guess my point is that we as conservatives are finished in this country. While polls show that most American by nature are fiscally and socially conservative, the American people have decided that values don’t matter and that change in whatever form it comes in will be better. Unfortunately for the nation the damage done by President Obama and his liberal congress will probably be permanently damaging to the economy and our security. The sad part is that the media and the Democrats will find a way to blame the Republicans and the Americans who know more about American Idol than politics will march willingly to the continued slaughter of our nation’s freedoms and ideals.
